Visitor Visa

Visitor Visas

Australia offers a variety of Visitor visas tailored for different purposes, including tourism, business, family visits, and medical treatment. These visas provide the flexibility to explore Australia’s rich culture, scenic beauty, and modern cities, making it essential to choose the right visa that aligns with your travel intentions.

Key Visitor Visa Subclasses

Australia offers three main types of Visitor visas for short stays, each with different eligibility criteria and purposes:

Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)

This is the most flexible visa with multiple streams:

  • Tourist Stream – for holidays or visiting family/friends
  • Business Visitor Stream – for short business activities
  • Sponsored Family Stream – if you are sponsored by a family member in Australia
  • Approved Destination Status Stream – for Chinese citizens in organized tours
  • Frequent Traveller Stream – for frequent specific country’s visitors

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (Subclass 601)

  • Available to passport holders of certain countries (like USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore)
  • Allows multiple short visits for up to 3 months each
  • A small service charge (AUD 20) applies

eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651)

  • Free visa for passport holders from eligible European countries
  • For tourism or business purposes
  • Multiple entries allowed for up to 3 months per visit within a 12-month period

Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462/417)

  • Allows young adults (18 to 30 years old; 35 for some countries) to holiday and work in Australia
  • You can work in Australia to fund your travels
  • Study for up to 4 months
  • Must meet English language and educational requirements
  • Health and character checks are mandatory

General Requirements for Australian Visitor Visas

While specific criteria vary for each visa subclass and stream, common basic requirements often include:

  • Health Checks: You may be required to undergo health examinations by an approved panel doctor.
  • Financial Documentation: You must provide evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself and any accompanying family members during your entire stay in Australia, including funds for onward or return travel.
  • Character Certifications: You must meet Australia’s character requirements, typically involving police certificates from countries where you’ve lived for more than 12 months in the past ten years.
  • Health Insurance: While not always mandatory for all visitor visas, it is highly recommended to obtain private health insurance to cover potential medical costs, as most visitor visa holders are not covered by Australia’s national health scheme (Medicare) unless a reciprocal healthcare agreement is in place with their home country.
  • Genuine Temporary Entrant: You must convince the Department of Home Affairs that your intention is to visit Australia temporarily for the stated purpose and that you will depart Australia before your visa expires.
  • No Outstanding Debts: You must have no outstanding debts to the Australian government, or have arranged to repay them.
