(Subclass 482)
The Skills in Demand Visa Subclass 482 is a temporary visa that allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia in occupations experiencing labour shortages. Sponsored by an approved employer, this visa helps fill urgent skill gaps and offers multiple streams based on the occupation and salary level. It provides a pathway to permanent residency in certain cases and allows applicants to include eligible family members.
Skills In Demand Visa
The Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa allows skilled workers to temporarily live and work in Australia in shortage occupations. Sponsored by an approved employer, and may lead to permanent residency. This visa has three main streams:
1. Core Skills Stream
- Nominated occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)
- Paid at least the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR) and above Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) which is $76,515 from 1 July 2025.
- Minimum 1-year relevant work experience
- Skills assessment (if required)
- Work only for the sponsoring employer
- Meet English proficiency (unless exempt)
2. Specialist Skills Stream
- Nominated occupation in ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6
- From 1 July 2025, the annual salary must be at least AUD 141,210 or the applicable Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR), whichever is higher.
- Minimum 1-year relevant work experience
- Skills assessment (if applicable)
- Work for the sponsoring employer
- Meet English proficiency (unless exempt)
3. Labour Agreement Stream
This stream applies when an Australian employer has a Labour Agreement with the Department of Home Affairs to address workforce shortages.
- Nominated for an occupation under the Labour Agreement
- From 1 July 2025, the annual salary must be at least AUD 53,900 or the applicable Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR), whichever is higher.
- At least 12 months full-time equivalent experience within the last 5 years
- Part-time/casual work must equate to full-time
- Skills assessment (if required)
- Work exclusively for the sponsor
- Meet English language requirements (unless exempt)
Pathway to PR -Subclass 186 Visa
The 482 visa can lead to permanent residency through:

Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS): After 2 years with the same employer on a 482 visa (under the same occupation), you may be eligible for the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream.

Age and English Requirements: Must generally be under 45 and meet competent English requirements, unless exempt.

Skills & Licensing: You must continue to meet skills, registration, or licensing requirements for your nominated occupation.
Application Process
The visa process involves three essential stages:

- Sponsorship Application: The employer applies to become an approved sponsor.
- Nomination Application: The employer nominates a skilled position to be filled.
- Visa Application: The applicant submits the visa application for assessment.

Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria for Applicant
To be eligible for the Subclass 482 visa under any stream, you must generally:
- Have a minimum of one years of relevant work experience in your nominated occupation.
- Hold a valid nomination from an approved sponsor.
- Have completed any required skills assessment or qualification requisites for your occupation.
- Provide valid proof of English language proficiency, meeting the minimum criteria for your stream.
- Meet any other specific requirements or conditions applicable to your visa application.
- Fulfil the health and character requirements.
- Meet the specific requirements of the individual stream you are applying under.
Eligibility Criteria for Nominating Employers
If you are an employer seeking to sponsor an overseas applicant for a skilled position, you must:
- Be a legally operating business in Australia.
- Nominate your employee for an eligible occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) (as per the stream).
- Submit a valid employment contract for the nominated position.
- Clearly specify the location and period of the job in the nomination.
- Provide evidence of Labour Market Testing (LMT) where required, demonstrating that no suitable Australian worker is readily available for the role.
- Hold a valid standard business sponsorship, which is valid for five years from the date of its approval. The sponsorship application fee is AUD 420.
- Pay the nomination application fee, typically AUD 330. Additionally, employers are required to pay the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy, which varies based on business turnover and visa duration.
English Language Requirements
All stream requires an overall IELTS score of 5.0, with no individual band score below 5.0 or equivalent unless exempted.
Health and Character Requirements
All primary applicants and accompanying family members must meet specific health and character criteria:

Medical Examinations: Undergo medical exams within 12 months before applying to meet health requirements.

Police Clearances: Provide police clearances from each country lived in for 12+ months over the past 10 years (if aged 16+).
Adding Family Members
You can include the following dependents in your visa application:
