GSM Visa

GSM Visa

Dreaming of living and working permanently in Australia as a skilled worker?

General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is your pathway to achieving that goal. Designed for qualified individuals with in-demand skills, the GSM visa allows you to apply independently or through sponsorship from an eligible Australian employer.

Australian GSM Visa Subclasses

Under the GSM category, Australia offers several visa options:

  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)
  • Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 887)

The SkillSelect Program

To apply for an Australian GSM visa, you must first go through the SkillSelect Program. This online system involves two key steps:

  1. Submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI): This is an online form where you provide essential details about your skills and qualifications.
  2. Submitting the Actual Visa Application: Only after receiving an invitation can you proceed with your formal visa application.

What to Include in Your Expression of Interest (EOI)

While the exact information may vary depending on the specific visa you are applying for, some essential details are always required to successfully lodge your Expression of Interest (EOI):

  • Personal information
  • Work experience details
  • Qualification documents
  • Proof of English language ability (e.g., IELTS scores)
  • Details of a successful skills assessment for your nominated occupation

Skills Assessment Validity

As of July 1, 2014, a skills assessment is generally valid for three years from its issue date, unless a shorter validity period is specified. It’s crucial that your skills assessment is valid at the time of visa application.

Visa Requiring an Invitation from Skill Select

The following five visa require an invitation from your Expression of Interest before you can apply:

  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
  • Skille Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
  • Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 887)
