The Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa Subclass 173 allows eligible parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia for up to two years. This visa cannot be extended or renewed, but it offers a pathway to permanent residency through the Contributory Parent (Permanent) Visa Subclass 143. The Subclass 143 visa grants permanent residency and can be applied for directly or as a second stage after holding a Subclass 173.

Sponsorship Eligibility Criteria

To apply for either visa (173 or 143), you must have a sponsor typically your child who is settled in Australia. If your child is under 18, acceptable alternative sponsors may include:

  • Your child’s spouse (must be 18+ and a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen)
  • A relative or legal guardian of your child
  • A relative or legal guardian of your child’s spouse
  • A community organization

 

Note: If sponsored by a community organization, evidence of a genuine connection or a formal statement of support from a senior representative is required. The organization must also demonstrate financial capacity to support you upon your arrival.

Eligibility Criteria for Visa Applicants

 

For the Subclass 173 Visa

  • Your child must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • Your child must have been lawfully living in Australia for at least two years.
  • You must have a sponsor.
  • You must meet the balance of family test.
  • You must satisfy health and character requirements.

 

For the Subclass 143 Visa:

  • If applying after a 173 visa, you must hold a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa.
  • You must meet all the criteria applicable to the temporary Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173).

 

Relationship Evidence Requirements 

To confirm your relationship with your sponsor, you’ll need to submit certified copies of the following documents:

  • Birth certificates

  • A family record book or equivalent documentation

  • Marriage certificate (if your child’s partner is the sponsor)

  • Legal documents proving guardianship (if a guardian is the sponsor)

  • Any other credible documentation establishing the relationship between you, your child, and the sponsor (if applicable)

If a community organization is acting as your sponsor, they must also provide:

  • A copy of their registration certificate

  • Documentation showing the representative is authorized to act on behalf of the organization (such as board or committee approval)

  • Proof of sufficient financial resources to support you after your arrival in Australia

 

Adding Family Members

You may include the following family members in your visa application:

  • Your spouse or de facto partner

  • Your dependent child or step-child, or your partner’s dependent child/step-child
