Carer Visa (Subclass 116/836) allows individuals to live in Australia permanently to care for a relative who cannot access adequate care from other family members or community services. To qualify, the person requiring care must:

  • Have a long-term medical condition preventing them from performing daily activities, OR

  • Need practical support to care for a family member with a serious medical condition.

Key Conditions 

  • Subclass 116: Applicants and all dependent family members must be outside Australia both when applying and when the visa is granted.
  • Subclass 836: Applicants and all dependent family members must be inside Australia at both the time of application and grant.

This visa should only be considered if no other family member or local support service in Australia is able to provide the required care.

 

Eligibility Criteria

Visa Applicants

  • Must live in Australia to provide ongoing care for a relative with a long-term medical condition, or assist a relative caring for a family member with such a condition.
  • The relative must not be able to receive adequate care from other relatives or community, hospital, welfare, or nursing services in Australia.
  • Must be genuinely willing and capable of providing the required care or assistance.
  • Must be sponsored by the relative needing care or their partner.
  • Must meet health and character requirements (including all dependent applicants).
  • If you are applying for this visa to help your relative care for a family member, both your relative and the person needing care must reside in the same home.

 

Relatives

  • Must be usually resident in Australia.
  • Must be the visa applicant’s partner, child, parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew (including step-relatives).
  • Must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

 

Sponsors

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be settled in Australia as a citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • Must be the relative who requires care themselves, or the spouse/partner of the person needing care and living in the same home.

  • Complete medical examinations within 12 months of lodging the visa application
  • Provide police clearance certificates from each country lived in for 12 months or more over the past 10 years (after turning 16), if requested
